About Kim Legler
Welcome to my new blog! Let me start my introducing myself a bit for those that do not know me! I am a Canadian Fashion Designer + Artist who was born and raised in Yellowknife, NT - one of the most beautiful (and coldest) places on earth! I grew up experiencing harsh winters of -40 ºC, 24/hr daylight in summer, and the most spectacular skies! Home to the Aurora Borealis, rich hues of sunset, and the brightest stars - which is probably why I am such a dreamer! I am so proud to be from the North, and always draw inspiration from my hometown into each collection. It's a huge part of who I am, and why I'm the creative person I am today.
Art, fashion and nature are my most favourite things in life. I always try to get outdoors when I can, I love the serenity of nature. When I was young my brother and I used to bike down to Old Town and borrow our great-uncle's canoe, we'd set off from this very dock pictured above, go into the middle of the lake and jump into the freezing cold water! My great-uncle is a very creative person, and always encouraged me to continue drawing and being artistic when I was younger. I remember he had a mannequin at the entry of his carving studio that he would always dress up, and when I would visit it was the first place I'd go - to see what she was wearing!
When I was just 19 years old I left Yellowknife on my own to attend Fashion Design school in Vancouver, BC. I graduated with a Diploma in Fashion Design from La Salle College, and moved to Edinburgh where I worked for British Fashion Designer Amanda Wakeley, who is known for her evening and cocktail dresses. It was through working for Amanda where I started to understand my own design aesthetic. By November 2013 I launched my own fashion label out of Poole, a coastal town in the county of Dorset. Since then I have relocated back to Vancouver, and have been working with private clients, showcasing my collections, and building my brand.
I recently re-launched my website so that I can personally connect with my clients. Each piece in my shop, whether it be a piece of clothing or artwork, has been handmade by me. When you order from my shop, you're getting a unique item that has a story, an item that no one else is going to have. I handpick all of my own fabrics, and am always trying to implement new ways where I can contribute to being sustainable. Recently, my new thing is making hair ties that tie around your pony tail from bits of scrap fabrics that I have left over. It's a really great way to add a touch of colour to your outfit. I hope you've enjoyed my blog post, and just want to thank each and every one of you for your continued support!
